Wildfire Suppression Program
The Wildfire Suppression Program provides wildland fire fighting job training to youth between the ages of 18 and 24. Prospective participants must pass a physical examination and aptitude test before they can be considered for this rigorous program. They must also meet eligibility requirements set by the North Monterey County Fire District.
Once enrolled, students are trained in fire behavior and suppression tactics. Supplementing their training at Rancho Cielo is field experience with local fire crews. They learn about fire line construction, progressive hose lays, chainsaw use and safety, prescribed fire operations and more, as they help to reduce wildland fuels in the community.
The much-needed program is supported through grants and donated equipment. Training is provided by the North Monterey County Fire District, Salinas Rural Fire District and Cal Fire in partnership with the Office of Employment Training.
Trained graduates have the opportunity to work full time for the Rancho Cielo Wildland Fire Mitigation crew and at the same time they are officially registered volunteers for the North Monterey County Fire District. Rancho Cielo’s crew provide valuable community services to county residents who cannot afford fire suppression work on their property.
The program is funded by the generous support of the Monterey County Community Foundation and Monterey County Office of Employment training through Workforce Investment Act funds.
