This summer has been one for the books for our Auto & Diesel Repair and Classic Car Restoration students. They had the incredible opportunity to welcome Tony Purnell, a world-renowned UK engineer and entrepreneur whose career has stretched from Formula One to the Olympics.
Purnell founded Pi Research, a company that became a global leader in racecar electronics before being acquired by Ford Motor Company. He later served as Team Principal for Jaguar Racing, steering the team through its transition into what is now Red Bull Racing. His influence also played a significant role in British Cycling’s Olympic success; Purnell was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge and elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
When Purnell spoke with our students, he didn’t just share career highlights; he offered valuable insights. He discussed failure, persistence and the mindset required to succeed. His honesty and stories lit a spark, showing our students that setbacks can be stepping stones and that chasing big dreams is always worth it.
Students rolled up their sleeves and worked side by side with Purnell’s team on a 1953 Jaguar C-Type race car. Together, they polished and prepped the stunning vehicle for the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The beautiful automobile earned second place in its class! (Watch the video below.)
We couldn’t be prouder of Purnell and his team from Cambridge, England, and we’re deeply grateful for all the time they spent with our students. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
This summer was also big for our Classic Car Restoration program’s latest project, led by instructors Marcus Evans and Roy Sosa. They have been guiding students through the restoration of a 1929 Ford Model A Roadster. Their dedication kept the work moving forward to the point where it was in good enough shape to be showcased at Pebble Beach.
Monterey Car Week Adventures
Our students don’t just read about the world of classic cars; we ensure they experience it firsthand. Here’s a look back at the highlights:
Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum: A handful of students sat in on conversations with some of the industry’s biggest names.
Model A Showcase at Pebble Beach Concours Village: The Model A turned heads and sparked conversations with guests from all over the world.
MG Showcase at The Quail Lodge: Our 1952 MG took the spotlight at one of the most exclusive gatherings in motorsports.
RM Sotheby’s Auction – Monterey: A small group of students got behind-the-scenes access while volunteering at this prestigious auction.
Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance: Students attended the 74th Concours, soaking in the sights, sounds and stories of one of the most iconic automotive events in the world.
It was another summer to remember. From polishing an award-winning Jaguar with an industry legend to showcasing our own restorations on a global stage, our students had the opportunity to experience events that few others do. This summer also showed them—and all of us—just how far their skills can take them.
Rancho Cielo couldn’t be prouder.
